Introducing OpenVista

OpenVista is a cost-effective, open, trusted and complete EHR that enhances patient safety, increases clinical and operational efficiencies and enables improved quality of care.

Medshpere encourages healthcare provider organizations to access OpenVista and personally discover how our commercialized version of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) VistA solution can enable hospitals to realize the goal of higher quality healthcare. An Open Source approach to healthcare IT, embodied in Medsphere's concept of the Healthcare Open Source Ecosystem, can revolutionize the provision of care by enabling the contributions of a wide range of healthcare-affiliated parties. Medsphere is confident hospitals that successfully adopt such technology and utilize it as a catalyst for cultural and procedural change will reap benefits for both patients and the bottom line.

Medsphere is committed to developing an Open Source community oriented around Medsphere OpenVista® and we welcome your participation in OpenVista projects. If you have an idea on how to improve quality, enhance functionality, or accelerate innovation in OpenVista we encourage and welcome your input -- please join our mailing lists.

The OpenVista release has three components: OpenVista Clinical Information System (CIS), OpenVista Server, and a Medsphere demonstration data set (included with the server release).

OpenVista CIS for Windows and Linux

OpenVista Clinical Information System (CIS) 1.0 Beta is a cross platform application based on C# and GTK#/ GTK+. CIS runs on the MS and Mono .NET frameworks. It is based on the design of the VA's Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) along with image viewing, and other commercial enhancements. CIS will be Medsphere's technical platform for our new pharmacy and nursing modules.

If you want to try CIS without installing the Server or downloading the Appliance, Medsphere offers a Public Demo server.

OpenVista Server with Medsphere Demo Data

OpenVista Server 1.5.86 is derived from the VA Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) VistA server release of June 2006 and includes defect corrections and a selection of commercial enhancements equivalent to what has been released at Medsphere client sites.

The Medsphere demonstration data set is populated with clinically relevant test data to assist developers and clinical experts in both evaluating the software and testing functionality at a clinical level.

OpenVista Appliance

Due to the various technologies and skill sets required to install, configure and run the OpenVista Server and OpenVista CIS, it made good sense to prepare a virtualized system allowing healthcare experts and developers alike to easily download and run a completely configured OpenVista system.

Besides OpenVista Server and OpenVista CIS, the OpenVista Appliance includes a number of other Open Source packages. Thanks to the projects listed below (and many unnamed projects as well) without which we would not have been able to create this completely Open Source and Linux-based technology stack.

At this time, the OpenVista Appliance is available as a VMWare Virtual Machine. This requires you download and install the VMWare Player. Additionally, to initially decompress the virtual machine, 7zip is required.
